4/2/2024 0 Comments First AidLife can be hazardous. Who among us has not had the experience of needing some basic wound care when out and about? Now add in outdoor activities, carving wood, making fires, and the other things I and my family enjoy, and I can assure you we go through a lot of band-aids.
Recently I added some small first aid kits to the Cobbled web store. I have been a believer in carrying some basic supplies to fix small injuries for a long time. A few band-aids of various sizes, some kind of topical antibiotic, and a little tube of over the counter pain medication will get you pretty far most of the time. Add some larger bandages and tape, something for stings and bites, and some some tweezers and now you're even better equipped. My focus here is on what I call a "boo-boo kit" vs. a trauma kit. By all means, seek training and carry a more comprehensive kit if you have the inclination. I have been fortunate to go through some more advanced training, and carrying a tourniquet, compression bandages, chest seals, and so on while also knowing what to do with them gives me confidence and peace of mind. If you are interested, look up a course through stopthebleed.org or the Red Cross. There are some good online courses out there, but do not neglect to practice if that is the route you go. The boo-boo kits that I have in the shop are both made by Adventure Medical, a company I have had good experience with. I like them because they contain good quality basic items, and they come in a reusable container, so you can restock items as you use them, or add items that suit your needs, like a tick spoon. If you are making your own boo-boo kit, I recommend using a red container so that you can easily have someone else retrieve it from your kit if needed. (Tuff Possum Gear is a great place to get an empty pouch for this purpose.) At least one kit should also be small enough to be carried with you in your purse, backpack, cargo pocket, etc. A larger kit kept in a vehicle is also a great idea, but having some basics close at hand will do you the most good when you need it. At the least, a few band-aids in your wallet or in the back of your phone case will be better than nothing. Let me know what questions you have, and happy adventuring! -Martin
