4/2/2024 0 Comments First AidLife can be hazardous. Who among us has not had the experience of needing some basic wound care when out and about? Now add in outdoor activities, carving wood, making fires, and the other things I and my family enjoy, and I can assure you we go through a lot of band-aids.
Recently I added some small first aid kits to the Cobbled web store. I have been a believer in carrying some basic supplies to fix small injuries for a long time. A few band-aids of various sizes, some kind of topical antibiotic, and a little tube of over the counter pain medication will get you pretty far most of the time. Add some larger bandages and tape, something for stings and bites, and some some tweezers and now you're even better equipped. My focus here is on what I call a "boo-boo kit" vs. a trauma kit. By all means, seek training and carry a more comprehensive kit if you have the inclination. I have been fortunate to go through some more advanced training, and carrying a tourniquet, compression bandages, chest seals, and so on while also knowing what to do with them gives me confidence and peace of mind. If you are interested, look up a course through stopthebleed.org or the Red Cross. There are some good online courses out there, but do not neglect to practice if that is the route you go. The boo-boo kits that I have in the shop are both made by Adventure Medical, a company I have had good experience with. I like them because they contain good quality basic items, and they come in a reusable container, so you can restock items as you use them, or add items that suit your needs, like a tick spoon. If you are making your own boo-boo kit, I recommend using a red container so that you can easily have someone else retrieve it from your kit if needed. (Tuff Possum Gear is a great place to get an empty pouch for this purpose.) At least one kit should also be small enough to be carried with you in your purse, backpack, cargo pocket, etc. A larger kit kept in a vehicle is also a great idea, but having some basics close at hand will do you the most good when you need it. At the least, a few band-aids in your wallet or in the back of your phone case will be better than nothing. Let me know what questions you have, and happy adventuring! -Martin

2/16/2024 0 Comments Welcome to Cobbled!Oh, my friends. Oh, I am so excited.
Here we are, standing at the edge of this new venture, one that has been a decade in the making, and I just am so thrilled that we finally have a place to share all of our passions and experiences and interests with a wider audience. A place to post my writings! A YouTube channel for traditional songs and how-to videos! A store, offering not only our handmade goods, but also products we have been using and believing in for years! This is a dream come true. Even if this blog post and this lovely website (with which I had very, very minimal involvement in making) only fall into the void and are never seen by a single pair of eyes, I still feel like WE DID IT. So, Martin and I have this daughter. Well, we have five daughters, but we have this one particularly vocal daughter, who has been after us for a few years now, telling us in a very critical tone that we don't follow our dreams. At first we reacted with, "oh, yeah, ha-ha, we are just dreamers." But after awhile of her keeping on about it, we started to consider the fact that maybe we aren't really following our dreams. We talk a big talk to our kids about following their hearts and mindfully setting forth into their futures, making sure they do something that makes them happy, make sure they have skills and songs and passions of their own to take into the world with them when they fly the nest, but what about us, as parents? Have we just felt like we are too old to take action on a new dream? Well, WE'RE NOT. So, here we are. We offer to you: COBBLED! A space for sharing and learning and pursuing. Welcome! |
